KNOW WHAT YOU WANT
Is your idea of a perfect holiday luxuriously sumptuous surroundings? Do you want to spend time docked at the most fashionable marinas? Do you like nightlife and dining out? Host parties for your friends on board? Learn several different water sports? Or simply anchor in a private cove away from the crowds and curl up with a good book?
Motor Yacht or Sailboat? Motor yachts tend to be larger, faster, and more luxurious and often usually appeal to those who desire the "super yacht lifestyle". Sailboats or motorsailors entice those who anticipate the feel of the ocean and the romance of the sea. However don't be fooled today's large motorsailors can have most of the luxury of a motoryacht, while adding the thrill of sailing.
Who will be going with you? The size of the party will determine how many staterooms you will need and how they need to be configured; couples, kids, singles? Bear in mind that the majority of vessels, even up to 200'+ can only accommodate a maximum of 12 charter guests. There are some exceptions to this, usually vessels over 270'. Adding a second or even a third vessel for large parties is sometimes an option. Call us if you have a large party you wish to accommodate.
How long will your charter holiday last? Charter yachts are usually available on a weekly basis, with additional days that can be added. The length of time you will spend on your charter will also be a consideration as to areas you wish to visit. During peak times such as Christmas and New Year many vessels require a minimum booking time (often two weeks) or charge a premium.
When and Where do you want to take your charter? You will want to plan early (holidays are often booked up to a year or more in advance) and be flexible. Look at the "Destinations" link on our website, it outlines some suggested locations and itineraries if you want some suggestions.
What is your total Budget? Including airfare, marina charges, fuel, food and beverages, embarking/disembarking charges, and gratuities. You should allow 40- 50% above the cost to charter the boat as a total cost estimate for the vacation.
NOW WHAT?
You have told your agent what you need and where you want to go. Now your agent has found the perfect yacht at the right time and place for your holiday, and it's within your budget. Here's what happens next:
The Charter Agreement: While at first glance, the charter agreement your agent will send you appears daunting, it is not as difficult as it would seem. You already have a basic understanding of different "terms", and you will want to go over anything you do not completely understand with your agent.
Payment: Once you fully understand and have finalized your charter agreement, signed by both parties, you will be asked for a 50% down payment, which will be placed in our escrow account.
The questionnaire: You will receive a detailed questionnaire to complete. This will pertain to preferences, special needs, dietary or medical requirements. This is vital for the crew to be able to provide you with the foods you desire and the appropriate activities to maker your charter holiday perfect.
Final Payment and Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA): The balance of your payment is normally due one month prior to the charter. You will also be asked to send additional funds to cover the APA, if that is the terms of your agreement. Depending on the "Charter Terms", the APA will typically be about 35% of the charter rate. If the full charter cost and APA have not been received prior to scheduled departure, the Captain may delay the start of your holiday. All charter costs must be reconciled before you disembark (end of charter) from the vessel.
Insurance: Cancellation and Curtailment Insurance is available to protect your investment if unforeseen circumstances prevent or cut short your charter. Ask your charter agent about this insurance and other forms of insurance that might be prudent.
Captain's Responsibility: A charter yacht captain will always try to comply with your wishes, but his primary responsibility is to the safety of the yacht and passengers. Should a scenario arise where a request conflicts with this responsibility, your captain will discuss all possible alternatives with you. However, when relating to the yacht and safety of those onboard, the captain's decision is final.
Gratuities: Tipping is customary and discretionary. Remember that your crew has worked long, hard hours to make your holiday a success. The tip amount will often depend on the location and customs/nationality of the vessel and crew. If you feel that crew has been excellent, a gratuity equal to 10-15% of the charter fee may be fair. If the service has been exceptional, 20% and higher might be warranted. The tip is handed to the captain at the end of the charter to distribute fairly between all members of the crew. If in doubt consult with your agent.
